Dr. Richard Wood: Registered Clinical Psychologist

I am a doctoral level clinical psychologist with 43 years of experience in clinical practice. My work with people has included long and short term psychotherapy with individuals, couples, and families. I also see children as young as 9 years old. Because people may have difficulty identifying all their concerns or even their most significant personal concerns when they are first seen, I have found myself helping people who present a wide and sometimes unexpected variety of personal problems that unfold as psychotherapy progresses. I do understand that talking about troubling feelings and experiences is hard, requires a lot of courage, and may entail a number of false starts. The work that I do often involves an in-depth look at people’s lives that can extend over months or longer. I also undertake solution focused short term psychotherapy that may encompass only 6-12 sessions.

My strong feeling is that the work I do with people has to be collaborative and flexible, giving the person I am seeing and me the best opportunity to craft an approach that makes most sense for them. In couples work, for example, I most often work with both partners together, but will occasionally see partners in individual sessions, as need arises. Similarly, in family work, I may see the family as a whole or various family members individually, as seems most appropriate.

People that I see may present a broad range of problems that can include depression, anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, substance abuse, response to abuse and trauma, grieving, and sexual dysfunction and so called sexual addictions. Sometimes work together is directed towards addressing enduring, relatively well established modes of thinking, perceiving, and feeling that are self and/or other destructive. While working full time, a small, but significant portion of my practice was devoted to psycho-legal assessment of personal injury.

At present, I am semi retired, working 3 days a week. My practice is entirely restricted to psychotherapy. I typically see patients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but my schedule may vary depending on people's needs.

Please also note that I have relocated my practice to Stratford , Ontario from Toronto.
All patients wishing to resume working with me can do so via phone and / or video sessions.
